What is the purpose of an Advocate ?

Advocacy is an active action by
an individual to create change.
Advocates work to promote a level
environment for their peers.
Discrimination of human and civil
rights is what fuels our passion
and ignites our souls.
Advocacy breaks down the barriers of
discrimination and builds up self
reliance, so that all people are
truly equal.

Mission Statement

To actively promote, defend and encourage members of the Deaf Community.
To equip others with the knowledge needed to overcome adversity and to promote
compliance of such all laws that insure and defend the rights of the Deaf Community,
in the most positive way possible.

DAILY DISCRIMINATION - Ongoing frustration:

You call for an appointment, naturally you ask if they will provide Interpreters.
Automatically the voice on the other end says "NO, we don't do that."
What do you do?

If you accept "no" - then you accept the notion that you are not equal with the rest of the world.
Look around you - Civil Rights have been given to you but like any struggle, it is a long battle.

Women have the right to vote now, but it was not always so. Deaf have the right to be treated like equals- you must first learn about your rights, no one will fight harder for yourself, than YOU.
Stop the excuses and get into the battle...
If you walk into a fast food joint and order a burger and then give you a fish sandwich instead.. what do you do ? ACCEPT IT ? NOPE... hand it back and get what you ordered..
Same with your requests.
Ask for an interpreter- then accept nothing less.
What you do today - makes the future better for our future generations.
IT IS THAT IMPORTANT.

Lip Reading

The most common question asked
of a deaf person is : "do you read lips " ?
We should all reply, "no, do you read sign"?

FACT:
No place in the Americans
with Disabilities Act is LIP
Reading listed as an effective
means of communication.
